Special Souvenirs

C and Ruby in EPCOT 2012.

A large amount of money is spent on Disney souvenirs.  We get caught up in the magic and the moment and want to buy each stuffed animal and tee shirt we pass.  With a gift store at every ride exit, Disney makes it very easy to spend, spend, spend.

On our second trip to Walt Disney World my dragon loving daughter, C,  found a stuffed dragon in the United Kingdom area of Epcot.  To me it looked nothing like a Disney toy at all.  But to C it was the most wonderful thing ever!  It was if it were a real dragon.  I really did not want to spend $28.00 on a stuffed toy but I had no choice.  I am so glad that she found and purchased that dragon.  Ruby, as she was named since she was a red dragon, was a constant conversation starter.  Every character we interacted with held or played with Ruby.  Aurora was scared and worried that Ruby was a mean dragon,  Mickey pretended Ruby was flying,  Jasmine laughed and joked that ruby must be silly like Abu.  During dinner at 1900 park Ruby was such a hit that both step sisters, the evil step mother, and the prince all came to our table at once to play with her.

After the time in the parks we boarded the Disney Dream for a 4 day cruise.  The fun with Ruby continued.  All the cast members and wait staff  played with or asked about Ruby.  Ruby made the vacation so much more interactive.  When we returned home C’s love of that dragon continued.  C slept with Ruby every night and played with her often.  During the year between that Walt Disney World trip and our latest, C made plans to buy the blue dragon.  During our latest trip Feb. 2013, C brought along Ruby, and  Saphire was added to the family.  Months later C still loves and cuddles with both of her dragons.

The moral of the story is don’t break the bank on souvenir purchases.  However don’t be so quick to say no to the items your little one wants so very much just because it seems unimportant to you.

When my brother and I were little, decades ago, the same thing happened to my brother. He feel in love with the fuzzy little creature from Captain EO, called fuzzball. My parents didn’t want to buy it but for the rest of the trip, that is all my brother asked for as a souvenir. So on the last few days of our vacation, they purchased a plush Fuzzball and that was his best friend for years! Here is a link back to the Fuzzball plush that my brother adored so much, in case you are wondering what the heck I am talking about: http://www.ebay.com/bhp/captain-eo-fuzzball
